Grateful for God's Attention

 Greetings church!

It’s Thanksgiving week! The Bible has a lot to say about thankfulness. One of the more famous verses is 1 Thessalonian 5:18, “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.”

Notice, it doesn’t say to give thanks for all circumstances, it says to give thanks in all circumstances. This is God’s will for your life. So, next time you’re wondering what God’s will for your life is remember 1 Thessalonians 5:18 – at least part of His will is for you to actively give thanks to God in all circumstances. Why? Because this will help you keep things in perspective!

Perhaps you’re struggling to be grateful this week for some reason, maybe this verse seems a bit daunting to you. I want to share a truth with you today that is always true and that will make you grateful no matter what.

Let me start with a question: what determines somethings worth? The answer is not an appraiser, or the age, or the usefulness or the rareness. The answer to the question “What determines somethings worth?” is “Whatever someone is willing to pay for it.”

In December of 2011 there was a great auction held to auction off the belongings of the late Michael Jackson.

Dorothy’s Dress - $480,000

A kitchen chalkboard where Jackson's children wrote "I love daddy," which sold for $5,000

An armoire upon which Jackson wrote a message to himself on the mirror that fetched $25,750.  The rug that was beneath the bed sold for $15,360

The total profit from the auction was over $1 million

Later on his famous glove went for $160,000

Jackson's famous "Thriller" jacket for $1.8 million earlier this year.

A thing is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it… consider the powerful words of John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting life.”

I’ve heard many a preacher say that you can replace the word “world” with your name. “For God so loved you that He gave His only Son…” No matter what, no matter what you’ve done or not done, no matter what your circumstances are this is always true. This is what you’re worth to God.

In Psalms 8 King David is writing of how overwhelmed he is by the greatness of God – how vast and mighty He is and then David writes this in verse 3-4,

“When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars, which you have set in place,
what is man that you are mindful of him,
and the son of man that you care for him?”

You want to be genuinely grateful today and any day? Know that the Almighty God of the Universe, who brings into existence things that do not exist, who manages the cosmos is mindful of, intimately familiar with, paying attention to you. And loves you more than any words could ever express.

Love you church.
